There’s architecture, and then there’s architecture. The kind that excites even neophytes like us.
In Shanghai, the undisputed star of the show is its Art Deco landscape. From Palmer and Turner’s iconic 1920s Peace Hotel, to the sexy, soaring geometric shapes of the modern Jinmao Tower, there are countless and varied examples of this gorgeous French-inspired visual art style – you just need to know where to look! This is your chance to stalk Shanghai’s most vibrant neighbourhoods with an expert to spontaneously uncover some of the most thrilling examples, and learn the stories of the people behind them. From the Hungarian gulag escapee who went on to design some of Shanghai’s greatest buildings, to the Chinese architects that merged Art Deco with feng shui to produce a fascinating hybrid still visible today.Enquire Now

Our favourite bit: There are plenty of jaw-drop moments on this tour – usually when you’re suddenly told to ‘look up’ by your expert and realise something spectacular was virtually right in front of you and you’d have otherwise missed it! There’s also a certain thrill that comes from spotting details in unlikely places by yourself – for example when you recognise a classic Art Deco sunbeam on the façade of a dilapidated building in Shanghai’s old neighbourhoods!
